64 BIT VMs on T610 poweredge server – bios change required

A recent migration of a 32 Bit SBS server to a new esxi 4 host went very smotthly. The improved performance and snappiness of the server was immediately obvious. This however was in preparation for the migration to SBS 2008 and an addition of a 2008r2 Terminal server. Once more Dell strike with the notion of turning off virtualisation support by default – so when attempting to install 2008R2 a message was presented that the process was not 64 bit and so therefore could not continue instalaltion.

A reboot when users permitted allowed a quick change in the bios to activate virtualisation. A reboot later and the installations of both SBS 2008 and Server 2008 R2 proceeded flawlessly. So the moral is – if 64 bit guests are going to be on ESXi on T610s then switch this on before installing ESXI and you wont go far wrong
