This issue was raised by a client who when printing IN CHROME on a windows 10 PC from any page was presented with a preview page that didn’t load and had to be forcefully shutdown. The first thing I noticed was that the dialog shown to the client when print was selected was Save As PDF and was told “thats the way its always worked for me”.
Checking the users printers – I could see a number of physical network and virtual (other pdf creating) printers listed – yet these aren’t selectable or visible in the destination control on the print dialog.
Researching this issued suggested a number of changes in the chrome://flags section which you get to by entering that in the url box in chrome but these seemed to be short lived if they worked at all.
Some suggestions were around removing the users settings or in fact removing Chrome and reinstalling.
Next stage was to test with Firefox – which worked fine.
Repeated test with Edge and the same behaviour as Chrome was noted !! So BOTH Chrome and Edge crash when printing web page and no windows printers are available as destination
[Solution]
After further research and testing I found the solution to be – Stop the print spooler service – start chrome and attempt a print / preview using save as pdf which should work – then RESTART the Spooler and restart Chrome – and try to print again
The proof that its worked should be that the destinations for printers now show the windows printers that are installed on the PC
Hopefully that helps with this particularly annoying hang in Chrome or Edge !!
