Managing your ebooks and ereader

I’ve collected a large number of pdf reference manuals over the years and I was looking for something to help manage them. I had come across Calibre and was wondering how it had developed since I last saw it. I have to say that I was quite relieved to find that it had actually turned into an application that bridges the gap between pdf and other ebook management and the device that you may be using to read them apart from your PC. Also the introduction  of tools to collect and deliver news information and other data to your ebook reader  is a great advance. The application is quite broad in functionality terms and does take a bit of configuring (mainly because there is so much stuff you can do). So far I am very happy with the product – which is free and I’m sure that there will be further articles on the tools ability to make ebook readers even more useful as well as keeping a handle on a large and unwieldy library of manuals and reference materials.

The developers summarise it as

calibre is a free and open source e-book library management application developed by users of e-books for users of e-books. It has a cornucopia of features divided into the following main categories:

  • Library Management
  • E-book conversion
  • Syncing to e-book reader devices
  • Downloading news from the web and converting it into e-book form
  • Comprehensive e-book viewer
  • Content server for online access to your book collection
