My new SBS 2011 fails to backup using inbuilt SBS Backup, please advise.

I have just finished installing a new SBS 2011 server for my company.  Once it completed I installed all waiting updates and then rebooted.  I have now tried to configure the SBS Backup and it fails within 2 minutes after starting.

Error message is ‘Backup unsuccessful. A volume shadow copy service operation failed. Unknown error (0x800423f0)‘.

Joe – I suspect you have fallen foul of the Microsoft Sharepoint SP gotcha.

When you installed the waiting updates you have allowed Sharepoint SP 1 to go on.  Although Microsoft have this update rolling out automaticall you will manually need to run PSConfig to complete the upgrade.

The steps you need to follow are:

1. Open an Administrative command prompt.

2. Change directory to C:Program FilesCommon FilesMicrosoft SharedWeb Server Extensions14BIN

3. Run PSConfig.exe -cmd upgrade -inplace b2b -force -cmd applicationcontent -install -cmd installfeatures

This should allow your backup to complete OK.
