Due to hardware failure I had planned to rebuild my media centre PC which is a Dell Studio Hybrid. This very small form factor PC has been the mainstay of my entertainment setup and I would recommend it if space and something easy on the eye are required. While discussing media servers with a client – they recommended I look at Plex which you can get here.
I found the installation very straightforward – install the server – tell it which folders contain media – then watch it catalogue and get artwork for. The media player component is functional – though I thought it a little austere. The main reason for looking at this though was the remote access and mobile access that the software provides.
Over the next few weeks I will be experimenting more with the remote / mobile aspects but so far the software has proven very easy to operate and very good at correctly detecting and identifying media.
