A colleague and were discussing a failure for DNS lookup on an SBS 2003 server where the secondary dns was the local Vigor 2820 router. When testing nslookup it failed after the requisite 2 seconds. After restarting the dns service and client on the server – the same result was found. We discussed the options and my colleague advise seeing the same problem on an SBS 2008 server where the server gave up after trying the secondary dns and did not bother to try any subsequent dns servers entered. The solution was to reboot the router as this seemed to allow the server to complete the resolution. Given the relative infrequency of the problem a firmware upgrade might not seem important but that kind of problem might cause much bigger problems that appear to be coming from elsewhere on the network.
