Working on a client machine recently – the user reported an issue with the Brother scanner software that they had been using for some time. The error occurred during scanning and was “Scanning failed” with a status of CC4-205-00000013. After checking the version of ControlCenter 4 and noting it hadn’t been updated in in quite a while – choosing an alternative was the next option.
For many years I was a big fan of Paperport variously owned by Nuance and then by Kofax and now seemingly owned by Tungsten
After checking the current Tungsten version number it appears that the version offered is just a single point release above the Kofax version so not in active development. After checking the brother forums about the error – there appeared to be nothing suggesting any workarounds or fixes but a few users mentioned moving to NAPS or Not Another PDF Scanner. Checking this out at their web site I thought this looked like a candidate for testing and I was not disappointed. It worked fine with the Brother scanner in question but also with other manufacturers of networked scanners.
A couple of other interesting features were
- Sharing scanners over network for wifi and other uses
- A command line for automation and scripting
- .Net library for application integration
- flexible MSI and GPO deployment with a portable version
The tool is Donateware and well worth that for the polished functionality.
