Its final. Microsoft have bought Yammer. The rationale is that Microsoft realises that social is the new kid on every block. So they take a look around and see whats worked. Hence Yammer as the target. Now I can’t criticise the choice since Yammer has shown itself to be an invaluable tool while incubating a new startup. It still has issues in terms of functionality and the stability of some of the plugins (think blackberry and Adobe Air reliability) but its certainly in the top tier for this kind of app.
So what should MS do with it ? Start by integrating into OS and into Office. Then everything else. Make the APIs even more appealing to developers. Focus on the missing functionality and get the quality issues resolved.
Then you might be able to see where the future of computing is. Its social. Everywhere.
