Recently after a reboot of my workstation I got a orange/brown box with the message that there was an update being applied to my Office 2019 installation when attempting to start Outlook. Outlook didn’t in fact start – instead giving an error after a few seconds of the update message being displayed.
The message was OUTLOOK.EXE – Application error…application unable to start correctly (0xc0000142)
Trying other applications in the Office 2019 suit elicited the same error message after the notice about an update being installed. After another reboot – the problem was still there. So a quick google later – I found references to the problem across various version and decided a QUICK repair through control panel was the next approach.
Thankfully this did actually cure the problem. However when I thought about the update and how the process for telling you there are updates is normally a bar across under the menu in Office applications – this method of telling you on starting the apps seems odd.
So if you are faced with Error 0xc0000142 after update to Office 2019 – try the QUICK repair first
