Xampp 1.7.4 upgrade issues :(

I was testing out an upgrade from a slightly lower revision and noted that there appear to be multiple issues with the upgrade. If you are not familiar – Xampp (available from http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp.html)and it is an easy to install Apache distribution containing MySQL, PHP and Perl.

Xampp is available for Windows , Linux, Os/X and Solaris and allows a quick and easy setup for  clients looking for a platform to test a proof of concept or some adhoc development. You can pretty much bolt  in other packages such as wordpress in just a few minutes – great for a quick test on a virtual machine for example.

The latest release though appears to either be buggy or have issues when upgrading. Its a pity as normally its a fairly straightforward upgrade. Grumblings on the forums and elsewhere on the web suggest its bee a little problematic.

So if you are going down this road – make sure you have a FULL backup that you can revert to – and consider a fresh install and then a migration rather than an upgrade (unless you have time to test and fix issues).
