I did an itouch iPhone OS 3.1 Software Update at the weekend but wasn’t sure what the update covered. Running it again for an iphone 1G I noted that

I have to say that Apple’s insistence on charging for the Itouch update while the Iphone update is free does annoy me a bit but you don’t really have a choice if you want to stay current and resolve some of this annoyances that the update addresses.
